 PREVIOUS CONSUMER ADVISORY

The United States Department of Energy adopted and passed into law a new standard in which all heat pump manufacturers in the United States must raise the minimum efficiency of all heat pump systems to a 13 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio).  The new Federal law will take effect in January 2006. This law was passed to reduce the number of new power plants required as our country continues to grow.  You can find additional information on this new law at www.energy.gov.

What this means to all of us is a higher cost on replacement systems. however, there are some benefits that can offset this cost.

Lower Power Bills — For every 1 SEER increase in equipment efficiency (compared to old equipment), the energy savings will be $100 per SEER per year on an average for a typical 3.5-ton home.  If the old equipment is 14-years old and running at an 8 SEER, a new system with a 14 SEER can provide $600 per year in energy savings. This goes a long way toward paying for the increased cost.

Higher Quality Equipment Means Better & Longer Warranties — As equipment is manufactured to a higher SEER there must be a higher manufacturing standard to achieve higher quality equipment.  The better manufacturers, such as Trane, will now maintain a 10-year all parts warranty on new equipment.

Better Air Quality — Today’s technology has provided better air filtration options that can be installed as part of your new higher efficiency equipment.

Quieter Operation — Higher efficiency equipment offers quieter and more dependable operation. As quality goes up, noise levels go down.

If your equipment is in imminent need of replacement (within 2 years), now is the time to consider replacing or upgrading your home comfort system.  Simply call the office to schedule an appointment with one of our Comfort Consultants. You will then have the information to make an informed decision whether to replace now or later.
